Why Most Voicemails Get Deleted in the First Three Seconds
Your customer’s thumb is hovering over delete before you’ve finished saying your name. The average automotive salesperson leaves a voicemail that sounds exactly like the last three voicemails the customer ignored β same monotone, same “just checking in,” same zero reason to call back. That stops today.
The Curiosity Formula That Gets Callbacks
The only job of a voicemail is to create enough curiosity that the customer picks up the phone. Don’t lead with your name or dealership. Lead with what’s in it for them. Tease a specific benefit β a vehicle update, a numbers conversation, a trade value β and then stop talking. The discomfort of leaving something unfinished is what drives the callback.
Effective vs. Boring: The Two-Script Test
Script A: “Hi, this is Mike from ABC Motors, just following up on your inquiry, give me a call back when you get a chance.” Script B: “Hi, I’ve got some updated numbers on that vehicle we talked about β I think you’re going to like what I found. Give me a call.” Script B wins every single time. The difference isn’t talent. It’s intention. Know what you’re trying to accomplish before you hit record.
Put It Into Practice This Week
Write out three voicemail scripts β one for first contact, one for a follow-up, one for a be-back. Read them out loud. If they sound like everyone else, rewrite them. Your voicemail is a sales tool. Treat it like one.
