Excellence Is Never an Accident: Carrying the Ram and Kintz Legacy Forward

The philosophy behind The Legacy Series: excellence in automotive sales and management is built on purpose, never left to chance. Honoring Alan Ram and Tim Kintz.

“Excellence is never an accident.” It’s a line Proactive Training Solutions CEO Michael Renaud returns to in Episode 30 of the Fired Up Podcast, and it’s the quiet thesis underneath The Legacy Series — the collaboration between PTS and The Kintz Group built on the teachings of two of automotive’s most respected trainers, Alan Ram and Tim Kintz.

Two Titans, One Belief

Alan Ram and Tim Kintz came at the business from different angles — Ram built his name on proactive process and the discipline of creating opportunity; Kintz built the Frictionless philosophy over 30 years of moving customers forward without resistance. But they shared one conviction: greatness in this business is never luck. It’s the output of deliberate, repeated, structured work. The salespeople and managers who reach the top of the board didn’t drift there. They were built — usually by someone who refused to let them coast.

“I Care Too Much About You Not to Push You”

Mike Sealey recalls Tim Kintz’s way of putting it: he’d meet anyone exactly where they were, but he cared way too much about them to leave them there. That’s the heart of it. Real development lives on the other side of comfort. A manager who only validates is not coaching; a manager who pushes because they’re invested is. The push isn’t pressure for its own sake — it’s what care looks like when someone believes you’re capable of more than you’re currently doing.

Teach the How, Not Just the Number

Renaud frames the practical version of this around an idea from Alan Ram: if a salesperson knew how to hit a bigger number, they’d already be hitting it. Demanding more without teaching the path is just noise. The leaders who carry this legacy forward teach the how — the words, the process, the next rep — until excellence stops being an accident and becomes a habit. That’s the difference between a manager who manages outcomes and one who builds the people who produce them.

Carrying It Forward

That’s what The Legacy Series exists to do: take the proven philosophies of both men and put them back in front of dealership teams, live and in full. It’s not nostalgia — it’s a working playbook. And it leads directly into Management by Fire, the live, two-day leadership event in Dallas, July 22–24, 2026, where managers learn to build excellence on purpose instead of hoping for it.
